extraterrestrial life of the universe: Europa

Description

Although my project is focused on the future of life on Earth, extraterrestrial life will be included as well, because humans will become a race to colonize various extrasolar worlds able to sustain life. Also, I will show some of the hypothetical life forms inhabiting some celestial bodies in the Solar System that supposedly could be suitable for life.

For decades it had been proposed that Jupiter´s moon Europa may harbor life beneath its thick ice sheets. The suspicions about the possibility of life were only confirmed when unmanned probes lowered to the inner ocean were able to recover the frozen corpses of some organisms that surfaced up to the ice sheets. Although the remains were scarce, incomplete and damaged both by glaciers crushing and solar radiation they were sufficient to promote a research on the possible ice ecosystem. A special underwater probe supplied with a drill boosted by the first nuclear fusion-driven engine, which could melt and break through the ice, was sent. Silence reigned for a whole week until the first images of the probe showed a cephalopod-looking organism tampering the lens. Soon, more and more creatures were photographed, confirming Europa as the first celestial body with complex life known besides our own. During the Colonization Era the entire ecosystem below the icy surface was catalogued. Common features among the “Europarians” were the ability to perceive electric fields, and all invertebrates and that most of them lead an inactive and sedentary type of life.

Among the groups that can be classified and mention are:

Europazoa: the kindom in which the different organisms were classified, they are composed of eukaryotic cells but with a different structure.

Palpomorpha: a group of organisms similar to the cephalopods of the Earth, they are characterized by having a type of pseudoskeleton, electric receptors which allow them to detect and capture different organisms, and jet propulsion. Their life cycle is pretty similar to that of the Earthly amphibians. They are divided into two subgroups.

A) Palphoteuthida: They are among the most advanced organisms in the moon. They possess two pairs of tentacles on their jaws, 3 pairs of electric sensors and jet propulsion. Their sizes range from a few centimeters to more than 5 m of length. They are the apex predators in Europa, filling most of the predatory niches. They are also very sociable; some species even travel in school formations.

B) Palpolarvidae: the representatives of this group have developed neoteny and fill lesser niches. Their appearance resembles that of the abyss fishes. They have a proboscis-shaped mouth which enables them to catch their food. Unlike their cousins, they do not move by means of jet impulse, but they have developed a set of fins.

Canceraluda: the closest things to the arthropods that can be found in Europa. Their measure varies from planktonic size up to 1 meter of length. The representatives of this group possess radula jaws which allow them to scratch the bottom, crush shells and even stab soft-bodied creaures. They have been classified into a great variety of groups.

Bibriomorpha: similar to sponges and coelenterates, they are sessile or inactive beings. This is the biggest group, and contains the largest organisms in the moon, reaching approximately 40 m long. They have a primitive nervous system similar to that of the flatworms, a rudimentary digestive system and some kind of muscular system.

Alucilethidae: kindred with Palpomorpha, these organisms are similar to the echinoderms. They have a cartilaginous structure which helps them to stay afloat, and allows them to keep their body rigid. They also have the ability to create strong electrical pulses from the muscles of their fins.

These are cool concepts overall.
